Kicking Back When Online
The information in this chart comes from the Experian Company, Simmons Multi-Media Engagement Study from the Fall 2009 data. But further into the email I received this morning I found this - how people spend their "relax" time on the web, by age group. One of the interesting things to note is that each list of 12 sites contains quite a few websites whose genesis is in other media.
For instance, Essence Magazine and National Geographic, Great American Country and Comedy Central, Animal Planet and VH-1 on cable, EllenTV and Tyra in syndication - isn't that interesting? And these websites are no doubt considered secondary to the original source programming and they probably make little or no money for the host company. Furthermore, these are not top-rated programming in their original forms by any means.
The only web-only sites are friendster.com, youtube.com and treehugger.com (which I'd never been to - I'm going to post about a great story I found on that one!)
Here's the Experian/Simmons header to the chart:
"The Personal Time Out dimension helps identify vehicles that people like to relax with and to spend their free time using. While there are similarities across users of all ages, these top websites for each age group show that younger users prefer social media and entertainment-oriented sites, while more mature users lean towards lifestyle sites when they just want to kick back."
